The short version: Standard draws the diagram. Professional draws diagrams that follow a formal notation someone will review, or that pull their content from a spreadsheet. A software architect writing UML and a network engineer whose rack diagram reads capacity from a database both need Professional. An operations manager documenting an approval process does not.

Before you buy, three things worth knowing
The desktop app is Windows only. There is no macOS version of Visio. On a Mac it runs only through a Windows virtual machine or Boot Camp, each needing its own Windows licence. Call us before ordering if that is your setup.
This is the desktop application, not the web service. Visio for the web, cloud storage and live co-authoring belong to Microsoft’s Visio Plan subscriptions. A perpetual licence gives you the application and files you save and share like any other document.
Colleagues can read your diagrams for free. Export to PDF or PNG, or send the .vsdx and they can open it in the free Microsoft Visio Viewer. Only editing needs a licence.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a subscription?
No. One payment, no renewal, and the licence has no expiry date. Visio Plan 1 and Plan 2 are Microsoft’s monthly subscriptions; this is the perpetual desktop product.
Can I upgrade Standard to Professional later?
Not by swapping a key — Standard and Professional are separate products rather than two tiers of one. Moving up means buying a Professional licence. Your existing .vsdx files open in Professional without conversion, so no work is lost. Worth deciding before you order if you think UML, BPMN or data-linked shapes are on the horizon.
Can I open a diagram someone made in Visio Professional?
The file will open, but shapes and features that only exist in Professional may not be fully editable in Standard. If your team shares diagrams and some of them use Professional stencils, it is worth everyone being on the same edition.
Does it run on a Mac?
No. Microsoft has never released a Mac version of the Visio desktop application. A Windows virtual machine or Boot Camp is the only route, and each needs a separate Windows licence. Ring us first and we will make sure you order the right combination.
Will it open older .vsd files?
Yes, both the older .vsd format and the current .vsdx open normally. Bear in mind that saving in the 2024 format may make the file unreadable to colleagues on much older versions, so agree a format if you exchange diagrams regularly.
How long will Microsoft support it?
Visio 2024 belongs to the Long-Term Servicing Channel release and receives security updates into 2029. The software keeps working beyond that; what ends is the supply of patches.
How many computers can I install it on?
One at a time. Reinstall as often as you need on the same machine, and move the licence across if you replace that computer. Running it on two machines at once is not permitted.
Is this a genuine Microsoft licence?
Yes. Atom Software operates as a Microsoft Authorized Partner, partner number 6285889. The key activates with Microsoft’s own servers and Visio shows as genuine under File, then Account.
