Diagrams that stay connected when you move them
Visio shapes are not clip art. Drag a box and the connectors follow it, re-routing around other shapes rather than crossing through them. Add a step into the middle of a flowchart and the chart reflows. That behaviour is the difference between a diagram you can maintain and one you redraw every time something changes.
Shapes that carry data
This is what Professional adds and it is the reason most people pay for it. Link shapes to a row in an Excel workbook, an Access database or a SQL table, and each shape carries that record’s values. Refresh the data and the diagram updates. Apply data graphics and the shapes change color, show icons or display data bars based on those values — so a server rack diagram shows which units are over capacity, or a process map shows which steps are behind schedule, without anyone editing the drawing.
The professional stencil set
Professional includes the advanced template libraries: UML 2.5 for software design, BPMN 2.0 for business process modeling, ITIL for service management, Six Sigma for process improvement, detailed network and rack diagrams, database model diagrams, electrical and engineering schematics, site and floor plans drawn to scale, and wireframes for interface design. Before you buy, three things worth knowing
The desktop app is Windows only. Microsoft does not make a Mac version of Visio. On a Mac it runs only inside a Windows virtual machine or Boot Camp, which needs its own Windows licence. Call us first if you work on a Mac.
This is the desktop application, not the web service. Visio for the web and real-time co-authoring come with Microsoft’s Visio Plan subscriptions. A perpetual licence gives you the full desktop app and files you save and share like any other document — no cloud workspace attached.

No. You pay once and the licence does not expire. Visio Plan 1 and Visio Plan 2 are Microsoft’s monthly subscriptions; Visio Professional 2024 is the perpetual desktop product.
How does this compare with Visio Plan 2?
Visio Plan 2 is a monthly subscription that bundles the desktop app with Visio for the web, cloud storage and co-authoring. Visio Professional 2024 is the desktop application alone, bought once. If you work on your own diagrams and share them as files or PDFs, the perpetual licence costs less over any period beyond roughly a year. If your team needs to edit the same diagram at the same time in a browser, the subscription is the right product.
Does it run on a Mac?
No. There is no macOS version of the Visio desktop application. It will run on a Mac only inside a Windows virtual machine or Boot Camp, which requires a separate Windows licence. Call us before ordering if that is your situation and we will make sure you buy the right combination.
Can people without Visio open my diagrams?
Yes. Export to PDF or PNG for anyone, or send the .vsdx file and they can open it in the free Microsoft Visio Viewer. A licence is only needed to create and edit.
Will it open diagrams from older Visio versions?
Yes. Visio 2024 opens .vsdx and the older .vsd format. Once a file is saved in the newer format, colleagues on much older versions may not be able to open it, so agree a format with your team if you exchange files regularly.
How long will Microsoft support it?
Visio 2024 is part of Microsoft’s Long-Term Servicing Channel release and receives security updates into 2029. The software continues to work after that date; what ends is the supply of patches.
How many computers can I install it on?
