Microsoft Project Standard 2024 is the full desktop scheduling application, minus the enterprise resource features most individual planners never open. You get the real thing: a task list that calculates its own dates, dependencies that ripple through the plan, a critical path, baselines to measure against, and the reports to show for it. One payment, one Windows PC, no renewal, and Microsoft security updates into 2029.

What Project Standard 2024 does
Scheduling that does the arithmetic for you
List the work, say which tasks must finish before others start, and the application computes every date. Push one duration out by three days and everything downstream shifts with it. The critical path — the sequence that actually controls your finish date — is marked automatically, so you can tell at a glance whether a delay matters or absorbs into slack.
Gantt charts people can actually read
Every task appears as a bar on a calendar with dependency arrows drawn between them. Task path highlighting traces what feeds into any bar you click, which turns “why did this slip?” into a thirty-second answer. Timeline views sit above the detail for the one-page summary you hand to a client.
Baselines, so you know where you stand
Lock a baseline once the plan is agreed. From then on Project shows planned against actual on every task and every cost line, and the variance is visible without you maintaining a second spreadsheet to track it.
Assign people and watch the cost
Add resources, assign them to tasks, set rates, and the plan totals labour and material cost as it goes. Within a single project you can see who is committed to what and where someone has been booked past their available hours.
Reports that are already built
Burndown, Cost Overview, Work Overview, Milestone and Upcoming Tasks reports come ready to use and update themselves from the plan. Export to PDF or copy into PowerPoint for a status meeting.
Templates to start from
Project ships with templates for common project shapes, so a new plan opens with a sensible structure instead of an empty grid. Save your own finished plans as templates and reuse them next time.
When would you need Professional instead?
Four things, and only four. If none of them is part of your working week, Standard is the correct purchase and Professional would be money spent on features you will not open.
| Capability | Standard | Professional |
|---|---|---|
| Gantt charts, dependencies, critical path | Yes | Yes |
| Baselines and variance tracking | Yes | Yes |
| Resource assignment and cost tracking | Yes | Yes |
| Built-in reports and templates | Yes | Yes |
| Team Planner — drag assignments between people | No | Yes |
| Inactivate tasks for what-if comparisons | No | Yes |
| Resource pool shared across several projects | No | Yes |
| Can connect to Project Server | No | Depends on server edition |
Put plainly: Standard manages a project. Professional manages a portfolio of them drawing on the same pool of people. If you are juggling five projects that compete for the same three engineers, that is the case for Professional. If you are running one build, one rollout or one campaign at a time, it is not.
Before you buy, two things worth knowing
It is Windows only. Microsoft has never shipped Project for macOS. On a Mac it runs only inside a Windows virtual machine or Boot Camp, and that needs its own Windows licence. Give us a call before ordering if you are on a Mac.
It is a desktop application, not an online service. Plans are .mpp files you save and share like any other document. There is no shared cloud workspace, no browser editing and no timesheet submission — those belong to Microsoft’s subscription Project plans, which are a separate product line.
System requirements
- Windows 11 or Windows 10
- 1.6 GHz or faster, 2-core processor
- 4 GB RAM for 64-bit, 2 GB for 32-bit
- 4 GB of available disk space
- 1280 × 768 screen resolution or higher
- An internet connection for activation
Project Standard 2024 sits alongside Office 2024 and older Office versions without conflict. It belongs to Microsoft’s Long-Term Servicing Channel release, which is the buy-once line rather than the subscription one.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a subscription?
No. One payment, and the licence has no expiry date. Microsoft’s Project Plan 1, 3 and 5 are the monthly subscriptions. This is the perpetual desktop product.
Can I upgrade to Project Professional later?
Not by changing a key, no — Standard and Professional are separate products rather than tiers of one. Moving up means buying a Professional licence and installing it. Your existing .mpp plan files open in Professional without conversion, so nothing is lost. This is worth thinking about before you order if you suspect you will need the resource pool soon.
How long will Microsoft support it?
Project 2024 is part of the Long-Term Servicing Channel release and receives security updates into 2029. After that the software keeps running; what stops is the supply of patches.
Does it run on a Mac?
No. There has never been a macOS version of Microsoft Project. It will only run on a Mac through a Windows virtual machine or Boot Camp, each of which needs a Windows licence of its own. Ring us first and we will make sure you order the right combination.
Will it open files from older Project versions?
Yes, .mpp files from earlier releases open normally. Once you save in the 2024 format, colleagues on much older versions may not be able to open the result, so settle on a format with anyone you exchange plans with.
Can I share plans with people who do not have Project?
Export to PDF for viewing, or copy the Gantt view into Word, PowerPoint or an email. They cannot edit the plan without a licence, but they can certainly read it.
How many computers can I install it on?
One at a time. Reinstall as often as you like on the same machine, and move the licence across if you replace that computer. Two machines at once is not permitted.
Is this a genuine Microsoft licence?
Yes. Atom Software operates as a Microsoft Authorized Partner, partner number 6285889. The key activates with Microsoft’s own servers and Project shows as genuine under File, then Account.
What if I need help installing it?
Installation help costs nothing. Call 1-844-414-0391 or email contact@atomsoftwares.com and our US team will talk you through it. Prefer someone to do it remotely while you watch? Add White Glove Setup at checkout.
What is your refund policy?
Thirty days. If it will not run on your computer, or it turns out not to be what you needed, get in touch within 30 days and we will replace it or refund you.
